Understanding Thai Customs

Import activities in Thailand are subject to a relatively heavy regulatory environment.  Thailand exercises regulatory control over imports mainly via tariffs, licenses, quotas, commodity inspection and registration requirements.

Thai Customs are undergoing a modernization process to facilitate trade.  EDI coverage is increasing and greater control is being exercised post-importation, rather than delaying goods.  New import and tax privileges are being introduced to promote Thailand as a regional hub within ASEAN.

Royal Thai Customs is responsible for enforcing customs and related laws, and for collecting customs duties and other taxes on imported goods.  Certain policy decisions are made by other relevant Government Departments includes Revenue, Excise, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Interior and the Fiscal Policy Office.
