The past year or so has seen a marked shift in rhetoric from an ever opening world to an ever closing world. Yet in practice, it appears pretty much business as usual both at border crossing and in companies' customs teams. So is the profession immune to change? Or is it just incredibly resistant to change? Regardless, the changing world will require a changing attitude and approach of customs and trade professionals. They will increasingly need to be linked and aligned to other parts of their business. They will increasingly be expected to add value rather than simply manage compliance. And they will increasingly be expected to modernise and use technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
